Periodontal Therapy
This disease process has received a lot of news coverage
lately because it has been associated as a factor in heart disease, high blood
pressure, liver and kidney disease, as well as strokes.
The correlation of many systemic disease processes with
periodontal disease is thought to be due to the periodontal bacteria's causing a
plaque or hardening in the arteries or blood vessels throughout the body.
These blockages cause a decrease in blood flow preventing important organs or
body parts from getting sufficient oxygen or essential nutrients. This can
create or worsen a disease state.
The dental profession had thought that there was some
association of periodontal disease and other system health issues, but until
recently there was no scientific basis for their beliefs. Recent
university studies have proved the link and hypothesized on the reasons.
Periodontal Disease is the #1 bacteria caused disease in
the world. It is the #1 cause of tooth loss in the U.S. today. It is
also highly treatable.
The treatment modalities have significantly changed over
the last 20 years. Better techniques along with better medications have
made periodontal surgery unnecessary in 95% of the cases seen in our office.
If you or someone you love, suspects they have periodontal
disease, please call our office for an evaluation.
