Common ear symptoms related to TMJ - Dr. Michael Dagostino, DDS
Common ear symptoms related to TMJ?
Newsletter for October 2009
Dear Patients,
The leaves are turning, the temperatures are dropping, and the Browns are losing. Just another fall in Cleveland, Ohio!
This past weekend I was in Dallas, Texas attending an educational seminar presented by an internationally renowned speaker Dr. Ralph Garcia. His presentation covered the latest treatments of TMJ dysfunction. Although I have written on this subject on a number of occasions, I felt some of this new information may be of value to my patients.
Recent scientific discoveries have lent real scientific evidence to the otologic symptoms associated with TMJ dysfunction. Some of the more common ear symptoms are tinnitus (ringing in the ear(s), loss of hearing, ear pain, fullness in the ear(s), and vertigo. These symptoms are often the direct result of an incorrectly related maxillae and mandible. In patients with mild to severe overbite we will observe a lower jaw which is postured too far back. This improper posterior position can create an obstruction of the inner ear canal, and an impingement of the nerves and blood vessels which supply neural and vascular innervation to the ear(s). Many of the patients who suffer from these symptoms are unaware of the interrelation of these and their TMJ and are either needlessly suffering or taking medications with little or no positive effect.
Should you or someone you love be experiencing any ear symptoms, please contact our office for a complimentary evaluation.
Sincerely,
Michael W. Dagostino, DDS
